Abstract

The author, based on archival documentation available in the Katowice institutions: the Silesian Library, the State Archives and the City
Archives of Katowice, discussed the architectural aspects of the construction of the House of Education of the Towarzystwo Czytelni Ludowych (People’s Libraries Society). The article includes the presentation of works submitted for the competition procedure in 1927, the
history of construction, analysis of the completed facility and its location against European trends during the interwar period. The author
characterized also the architecture of the House of Education considering its interior. The text uses previously unknown archival materials and enriches the knowledge of the building, which for many
years has been the seat of the Silesian Library.
