Abstract

The article characterises the connections of the phonographic industry with the emergence and development of South African kwela
music. It discusses how American phonography influenced the music played by young people on the streets of South Africa during the
1940s. The text also highlights 20th-century phonographic documentation of this music, including releases from the local Gallotone
record label. Additionaly, it describes the subsequent stages of the
development of kwela music from its creation to the present day.
