Abstract
The Dom Oświatowy, which from 1934 was the seat of the Śląska
Biblioteka Publiczna, functioned as the Wojewódzki Dom Kultury
i Oświaty Związków Zawodowych in the years 1945–1957. The main
task of the institution was the patronage over amateur artistic and
educational activities. Numerous art courses were held here, there
were theater, instrumental and dance groups, educational cinema,
a library and a reading room. The representative concert and lecture
hall was used for concerts, performances, competitions and sociopolitical events. A rich documentation of the activities of the Wojewódzki Dom Kultury in the years 1945–1950 is the photo album kept in
the collection of the Biblioteka Śląska (reference number G 4285 V).
It contains 193 black and white photographs, which became the basis
for the discussion of the WDK’s works.
In 1957, Wojewódzki Dom Kultury was taken over by the Wydział
Kultury Prezydium Wojewódzkiej Rady Narodowej in Katowice and
changed its seat, and the Biblioteka Śląska regained its premises in the
building located on ulica Francuska 12.
