Abstract
From the very beginning, magazines of the Catholic Church were intended primarily to serve religious education and moral formation,
while also covering current events from local, national, and international perspectives. One of these periodicals is the “Gość Niedzielny”
which celebrated its centenary in 2023. It was thus decided to take
a closer look at its functioning to indicate the changing position of
the publication. At its origin, there was the idea of a popular magazine, addressed to a group of believers from the diocese of Katowice, mostly from working-class backgrounds. The weekly gradually,
thanks to the work of professional editorial and journalistic teams,
became a magazine with opinion-forming ambitions, reaching wider
social circles. The paper describes these elements of the activity of the
“Gość Niedzielny” which made it one of the most widely read opinion weeklies in recent years.
