Abstract

This topic is closely related to the profile of our library, which, specialising in Polish contemporary music, began collecting its phonographic collections around 1950 and continues to expand them to this
day. Our experience, accumulated over several decades, now allows
us to look at technological changes in both the production and cataloguing of “live” recordings with a certain distance. Hence (I hope)
we can also accurately highlight the key issues and correctly assess
the relevant challenges.
The article consists of a brief presentation of the history and current
state of our collections, an analysis of selected issues related to the development of our stock, cataloguing and some challenges concerning archiving. Then, I briefly reflect on the principles and methods of making them available to researchers and the public and finally, I make
a cautious conclusion. Cautious, because this article is not a set of
ready-made answers, explanations and advice. On the contrary, our
experience proves that a librarian in contact with the ever-changing
reality must have an open mind and constantly seek new and adequate solutions. And perhaps most importantly – to keep learning to
pose questions accurately.
