Abstract

The text recalls one of the most important pre-war premieres of
the Katowice theatre – Stanisław Wyspiański’s Liberation, directed
by Leopold Kielanowski. It was a special event, because it was connected with the change of the name of the Theatre – the patronage of Wyspiański. The handwritten legacy of Leopold Kielanowski
kept in the Silesian Library and the available press from the period
allowed for a fairly detailed reconstruction of the circumstances of
this unique staging. The main character of the text is Leopold PobógKielanowski, who worked in the Katowice theatre in 1935–1938 and
directed many excellent performances. The article also recalls the
composer Antoni Żuliński (the author of the music for Liberation)
and the outstanding actor (who played the role of Konrad) – Stefan
Czajkowski, whose promising career was interrupted by the war (he
died in Auschwitz in 1942).
